TRANSPORTATION AND
OUR DEPENDENCY ON FOSSIL FUELS
There is scientific evidence that indicates that we
are in the midst of a worldwide emergency regarding global warming.
Moreover, our dependence on fossil fuels impacts our national
security, and much of our air and water pollution comes from the
burning of fossil fuels.
We have the resources and have made great strides in
developing the technologies necessary to dramatically reduce our
dependency on fossil fuels, but more needs to be done. One thing
is clear, a mosaic of alternative energy options will be required to
make viable substantial reductions in the near term. Wind, solar,
hydrogen, biomass, fuel cell, geothermal, cogeneration, et cetera, all
present opportunities. Moreover, individual consumption behavior
adjustments can create dramatic impacts in our overall fossil fuel
dependence.
Regarding transportation, traffic congestion, and the
pollution that goes with it, is clearly getting worse. Therefore, it is
critical that we plan effectively for convenient, efficient, clean, safe
and environmentally friendly and affordable mass transportation systems
compatible with recreational transportation options. Moreover, mass
transportation effectiveness involves not only the implementation of
better systems, but conscious lifestyle alignment with those
alternatives.
I have taken the bus extensively, biked to work and school, and have
used the light rail system many times. Broader light rail expansion
and/or the incorporation of new concepts like “Skyweb Express” should be
considered. Also, concepts that may be far less expensive like adding a
mass transit lane on the highway, using more fuel efficient and
environmentally friendly mass transit vehicles, and making our district
more bicycle and low-speed electric scooter friendly should also be
considered.
As your representative, I would support
-
The formation of international coalitions to
pragmatically address fossil fuel consumption reductions globally
-
Education programs that teach Americans how to
better conserve energy
-
The adoption of stricter fuel economy standards
-
The adoption of higher efficiency standards for
appliances and buildings
-
The conversion of fossil fuel subsidies for research
and development to renewable sources of energy
-
Funding for research into the development and
commercialization of new, cleaner burning, and renewable forms of
energy
-
Funding for alternative transportation planning and
research, and the commercial development of transportation
alternatives
-
Greater incentives to consumers and businesses to
utilize mass transportation and/or environmentally friendly
transportation alternatives
